Module 7: Passive Voice

Ever felt like your sentence is doing too much? Maybe it’s time to let the object take the spotlight! 🎤✨ Welcome to the world of passive voice — where the action still happens, but the subject takes a little nap. Whether you’ve been told to “avoid the passive voice” or you’re just curious about what it actually means, this blog is here to clear things up gently (see what I did there?). Let’s break it down, smoothly and simply!

PAST

Simple                         : Subject + Was/Were + Verb 3 (By: Optional)
Example: I was warned by mother yesterday.

Continuous                  : Subject + Was/Were + Being + Verb 3
Example: We were being told by security three days ago.

Perfect                         : Subject + Had + Been + V3
Example: She had been taught by her teacher.

Perfect Continuous     : Subject + Had + Been + Being Verb 3
Example: These had been being arranged.

PRESENT

Simple                         : Subject + Am/Is/Are + Verb 3
Example: They are warned.

Continuous                  : Subject + Am/Is/Are + Being + Verb 3
Example: The movie is being watched by me.

Perfect                         : Subject + Have/Has + Been+ Verb 3
Example: She has been taught by her teacher.

Perfect Continuous     : Subject + Have/Has + Been + Being + Verb 3
Example: It has been being arranged.

FUTURE

Simple                         : Subject + Will + Be + Verb 3
Example: We will be warned.

Continuous                  : Subject + Will + Be + Being + Verb 3
Example: We will be being told by the government.

Perfect                         : Subject + Will + Have + Been + Verb 3
Example: I will have been taught by my teacher.

Perfect Continuous     : Subject + Will + Have + Been + Being + Verb 3
Example: These will have been being arranged.

PAST FUTURE

Simple                         : Subject + Would + Be + Verb 3
Example: They would be warned.

Continuous                  : Subject + Would + Be + Being + Verb 3
Example: We would be being told.

Perfect                         : Subject + Would + Have + Been + Verb 3
Example: You would have been taught.

Perfect Continuous     : Subject + Would + Have + Been + Being + Verb 3
Example: It would have been being arranged.

So, there you have it — the passive voice in all its relaxed, background-friendly glory. While it shouldn’t be overused, it definitely has its moments to shine, especially when the doer of the action isn’t as important as the action itself. Now that you’ve unlocked this grammar power, go ahead and try writing a few sentences passively (intentionally, of course 😉). Because sometimes, letting the subject chill in the background is exactly what your sentence needs.
