your approach to leadership?
You must enter a minimum of
100 words and a maximum of 300 words.
Being a developing county, in order to fulfil energy
needs, Indonesia has been planning to develop a first Nuclear Power Plant;
nonetheless, it is still blocked by Indonesian people’s negative stigma about
nuclear energy. As a matter of fact, they have considered that nuclear
technology just a weapon that can destroy humans since learning about the
nuclear bomb stories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. This year, the
Indonesian government commits finishing proposal documents for building in
Borneo, Pati, and Bangka Belitung, however this cannot be implemented due to
Indonesian’s perspective.
As an Indonesia’s young nuclear generation, I cannot leave
it formally; I initiatively engaged in raising public
awareness of nuclear technology, and I am driven to encourage broader
public acceptance of nuclear energy as a clean and sustainable part of Indonesia’s
future energy. Firstly, I have been making campaigns via some social media
platforms such my blog (2530 viewers), Instagram (1,394 followers), Facebook
(1,150 followers), and the others.
From these, the Indonesia society is able to reach correct
information about nuclear technology, how application of nuclear technology for
welfare to be implemented, particularly in nuclear medicine. As a matter of
fact, they just know nuclear can be exerted to diagnose and treat cancers after
they carefully read my platforms. As a result, Indonesian people’s stigma regularly
commences to accept nuclear technology.
Moreover, from these, step
by step, Indonesian society has been knowing what nuclear technology is, they
can start acceptance for developing a nuclear power plant to provide clean
energy. Nevertheless, the most learning from this situation, I have grown and
learnt 3 insightful points. Firstly, to reach a goal, I must be brave to
collaborate. Secondly, to convey progress, I must consistently do it. The last,
to become an honoured leader, I must be able to respect others.
2. Relationship building and
influence
Tell us about a professional
relationship you have built and maintained. In your answer, please address:
How was the relationship
formed, and what made it important?
What did you contribute to
this relationship, and what did you gain?
How have you sustained or
developed this relationship over time?
How will these skills help you
build connections within the Chevening community and beyond?
During my study of bachelor’s degree, I strongly believe
that the bigger connection, the larger opportunities we can gain. I have actively
participated in numerous internal and external organisations on campus as a
leader, committee, volunteer, facilitator, tutor, and in other roles. Nonetheless,
the most relevant professional relationship that I have is the research field, I
am significantly connected some senior nuclear researchers in the biggest
research centre of nuclear Indonesia; the National Research and Innovation
Agency (BRIN Indonesia).
From personal branding on social media, I was offered a
position as a research assistant in The Research Organization for Nuclear
Energy BRIN. Through the BRIN network, I am privately closer with Prof. Dr.
Anhar Riza Antariksawan, who is a senior researcher of nuclear energy and a pioneer
for building a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Indonesia. From him, I am more
eager to get involved in developing the NPP. Besides, I got in touch with Heranudin,
Ph.D , a senior researcher at the Research Centre and Accelerator Technology,
who guided me during my research there. Currently, we are still collaborating
on research projects about nuclear accelerator and reactor.
From this link, it became more manageable when I was
invited via letter as a guest speaker in the webinar event “Nuclear Energy as a
Solution to Net Zero Emission in Indonesia” at the University International
Semen Indonesia. From these experiences, I could significantly promote my
slogan “Nuclear for Welfare” to young generations (college students) from
various universities in Indonesia. I believe that engaging youths will bring up
more impacts to the acceptability nuclear energy.
Through these networks, I am truly optimistic that I
can contribute to Chevening and its alumni network through various concrete and
positive collaborations in nuclear technology in the future.
3. Course choice and global
challenge
Explain your first choice of
course and university. Please relate your answer to one of the UK priority
areas for Chevening as referenced on the Chevening website here Chevening
application criteria | Chevening:
What is the specific priority
area you wish to address?
How will your chosen course
equip you to contribute to addressing this theme?
Why have you selected your
particular university in the UK?
How do you plan to immediately
apply the knowledge or skills you will gain after your studies?
I have been concerned with nuclear technologies since
I started my study at the Polytechnic Institute of Nuclear Technology. Focusing
on nuclear energy as green energy for replacing Coal Power Plants. I realised
that one of the fundamental problems related to nuclear energy is the lack of
nuclear engineers and nuclear education in Indonesia. The UK is a country that
has an adequate nuclear power system. Nuclear power stations in the UK are growing
rapidly, and it has become my reference to developing professional
organizations and nuclear power systems in Indonesia.
My priority is the MSc Nuclear Energy course at that
University of Cambridge because this subject will empower me to develop an
understanding of technical grounding in nuclear power generation including
reactor technology, nuclear safety, nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear energy policy,
public acceptability. I will learn the fundamental research knowledge and
skills to design, asses, conduct and analyse my future research project. These
capacities are needed crucially, and these complete the gap in my institution since
there are still a few academic staff focus on development and research capacity
of nuclear power.
Moreover, I will have the opportunity to take part in
many scientific projects which are conducted by the Cambridge Nuclear Energy
Centre (CNEC) and establish a professional network there. Being an alumnus from
this university will open the door for me to being part of a global nuclear
power research group. Therefore, I decided on this course as my preference.
In the first-second year after graduation, meanwhile,
I will take part as a researcher in building the first nuclear energy program
in Indonesia by the Nuclear Program Implementation Organisation (NEPIO)
collaborating with BRIN and IAEA. Besides I will go back to Polytechnic
Institute of Nuclear Energy Indonesia as a lecturer who shares learning
experience and motivates students.
4. Career plan and impact
Outline your medium and
long-term career plans. Please relate your answer to a key challenge or
priority facing your country or region.
What impact do you intend to
make in your home country or region?
How does your career plan
connect with your course of study and the challenge or priority you identified?
What barriers or obstacles
might you face, and how will you overcome them?
How will being a Chevening
Scholar help you achieve your ambitions?
It will give a significant impact on actionable plans
and prepare policy and strategic recommendations for the Indonesian government
regarding the infrastructure needed for a nuclear power program, as outlined in
the IAEA Milestones Approach. Secondly, to implement research skills from a UK
university, I will write a research concept and apply for funding aid for
novice lecturers at the university. Thirdly, I will have actively developing my
social media platforms such as my blog (https://isu-id.blogspot.com) to engage in raising public awareness of nuclear
technology. This will expand nuclear contents to make nuclear learning about generation
learn easier.
In the years of 2030-2035, I will pursue a PhD in
nuclear energy, using my network in the UK to find potential supervisors. After
this, I will supervise research by undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral
students on campus. Then, I will initiate the establishment of ‘Centre of
Nuclear Studies’ at the Polytechnic Institute of Nuclear Energy Indonesia and
involve my UK colleagues to collaborate and provide suggestions on the planning
and implementation process. With a high-quality education and research, it will
accelerate the production of nuclear engineer leaders with strong academic
backgrounds and leadership potential, that will improve the spread of nuclear
technology across Indonesia.
Therefore, with the support of the UK government,
knowledge and Chevening networks which consist of many professionals from
various fields and expertise, I believe that these dreams will come true. It
will be an excellent plan for me to connect them with researchers at my institutions.
I believe that investing in nuclear power means tacking global warming because
nuclear energy is clean and provides pollution free power with no greenhouse
gas emissions. This is a journey which I will undertake after receiving the
Chevening scholarship.
